I am writing to draw attention to the pressing issue of escalating security risks faced by women in Pakistan during the night hours. I also travel a lot, and feel immense insecurity at night, due to the absence of security officers. With every passing day incidents of harassment, assault, and intimidation against women are increasing, which is creating a distressing and fearful environment.
In recent months, there have been numerous incidents that underscore the urgent need for action. For instance, the recent case of a young woman being followed, harassed, and abused while returning from work, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking in our streets after dark. Additionally, reports of assaults and incidents of molestation in public transportation systems and poorly lit areas have become all too common, further exacerbating the sense of insecurity among women.
These harrowing incidents not only compromise the safety and well-being of women but also limit their freedom and access to public spaces.
Immediate and effective measures must be taken to ensure the safety and security of women across the country, irrespective of the time of day.
Increased police presence, particularly in high-risk areas, and improved street lighting are essential steps that must be prioritized. Furthermore, providing education on women’s rights, self-defense training, and establishing easily accessible helplines for emergencies is crucial in empowering women and ensuring their safety.
As a society, it is our collective responsibility to create an environment where women can move freely without the constant fear of harassment or violence. Government authorities and community leaders must collaborate to implement robust measures that address these security concerns and guarantee a safer environment for all individuals, especially women.
