Florida (Agencies): A Florida family is taking legal action against NASA after a piece of space debris crashed through their home in Naples earlier this year.
The cylindrical object tore through the roof and two floors of the seaside home, narrowly missing the family’s son.
The debris, which failed to burn up during atmospheric re-entry, was traced back to a 2.9-ton pallet of used batteries jettisoned from the International Space Station in March 2021. Although no physical injuries occurred, the family is seeking $80,000 in compensation for the stress and impact caused by the incident.
The case could set a precedent for handling compensation in similar space debris events.
NASA now has six months to respond to the claim.
