Islamabad (Khyber Mail): During the recent Indus Shield 2024 exercise, the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) officially unveiled the potential induction of the HISAR surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, marking a significant enhancement to Pakistan’s air defense capabilities. Developed by Turkish companies Aselsan and Roketsan, the HISAR system is designed to intercept a range of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, and precision-guided munitions. This advanced air defense system represents a major step forward in strengthening Pakistan’s defense infrastructure and provides a robust shield against potential aerial attacks.

The HISAR family includes the short-range HISAR-A and medium-range HISAR-O systems. HISAR-A has a range of 15 km and can engage targets at altitudes up to 5 km, while HISAR-O has a range of 25 km and can engage targets at altitudes up to 10 km. The system uses infrared homing for missile seekers and features a high-explosive fragmentation warhead. Additionally, both HISAR-A and HISAR-O are fully autonomous systems with integrated radar, command-control, and fire control systems, ensuring rapid and efficient responses to threats.

The Indus Shield 2024 exercise, hosted by the PAF at PAF Base Mushaf, saw participation from key air forces, including those of Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. The exercise aimed to enhance interoperability among participating nations and strengthen military cooperation. Activities included strategic air warfare drills, static displays of advanced military technologies, and aerial displays by participating air forces. Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir observed the exercise and was briefed on the PAF’s modernization efforts.

The unveiling of the HISAR system during the Indus Shield 2024 exercise underscores Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and fostering strong military partnerships with allied nations. This development also highlights the importance of robust air defense systems in ensuring national security and maintaining regional stability.
