Ego and fame are two attributing factors of show-off or flaunting. We often see people flaunting their success to others. They flaunt their achievements as a means to boost their ego and self-esteem before others. Such activities provide them with a sense of being better than others and status. They may show off their work, possession, or their mental abilities. Showing off makes them more confident and self-worth. Some people in our society show off to impress or to suppress others. However, in reality, showing off or flaunting yourself could bring several issues. It may damage their reputation and relations with others.
Flaunting success, wealth, appearance, and achievements may sometimes backfire. It may cause unexpected damage to reputation and relationships. People may perceive it as a person considering others inferior. For example, there is one Pakistani actor very popular for his work. However, he is disliked the most by people. He is talented, has several projects, and has several hits in the drama industry. But most people do not like him because of his behavior towards others. He in his superiority and popularity often humiliates others live in the show. His flaunting of success to degrade others or cut down between conversations is causing much damage to his reputation.
In addition, individual and business entities boosting more achievement usually fuel jealousy and animosity. Our religion also advocates refraining from showing off and living a simple life. Rich people flaunting their wealth could hurt people deprived of necessities. Hence, Islam teaches humans to live with simplicity, integrity, and honesty. Islam teaches to share with people, rather than hurting them by flaunting.
Flaunting success or showing off wealth, accomplishments and other materialistic things may bring more damage than self-esteem. It may damage one’s reputation. It could distract an individual from actual goals. It may impact the relationship with others. To overcome flaunting, it is crucial to lead a balanced life. One should discuss their success as a means to motivate others. They may share their wealth to help others. They should celebrate their success with others to make them feel part of it.
