Riyadh (Agencies): The first three lines of the Riyadh Metro, part of the largest urban rail network in the Middle East, will commence operations on Sunday, marking a transformative step in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to enhance public transportation and reduce traffic congestion in the capital.

The project, a cornerstone of Saudi Vision 2030, aims to improve the quality of life for Riyadh’s residents by offering sustainable and efficient transport solutions. The initial phase includes three lines: the Blue line connecting Olaya Street to Al Bat?ha, the Yellow line running along King Khalid International Airport Road, and the Purple line covering Abdul Rahman bin Awf Road and Al-Shaikh Hassan Bin Hussain Street.

The Red and Green lines will begin operations on December 15, followed by the Orange line on January 5, 2025. The $22.5 billion metro system, approved in 2012 and completed despite challenges such as the global pandemic, is designed with cutting-edge, energy-efficient technologies, including regenerative braking and solar-powered stations.

Maher Sheira, supervisor of digital infrastructure for the King Abdulaziz Public Transport Project, stated that the metro is projected to reduce city traffic by 30% and transport up to 3.6 million passengers daily. He highlighted the significant environmental benefits of shifting from car usage to public transport, noting that just 100,000 passengers making the switch could save over 3 million trees annually.

Integrated with an advanced bus system, the Riyadh Metro ensures seamless transitions between modes of transport with a unified ticketing system. Sheira emphasized the project’s focus on delivering a first-class passenger experience across all services, from stations to trains and buses.

“This initiative positions Riyadh as a global leader in public transportation, aligning with our commitment to environmental sustainability and urban development,” he added.

The Riyadh Metro is expected to set new benchmarks for urban mobility in the region, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s vision of fostering inclusive and eco-friendly urban growth.
