Manila, Philippines (Agencies): Japan has announced a $10.6 million aid package to enhance the Philippines’ military capabilities. The assistance, part of Tokyo’s Official Security Assistance (OSA) program, was formalized through diplomatic notes signed by Philippine Foreign Minister Enrique Manalo and Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya.
The aid package includes the provision of rigid-hull inflatable boats and coastal radar systems for the Philippine Navy, aimed at improving maritime domain awareness. Additionally, the Philippine Air Force will receive airborne surveillance radar equipment to bolster its monitoring and surveillance capabilities.
This latest tranche of aid is more than double the $4 million provided by Japan to the Philippines in 2023. The increased funding reflects Japan’s commitment to supporting regional security and enhancing the Philippines’ defense infrastructure, particularly in light of ongoing tensions in the South China Sea.
