Dublin (Agencies): In a significant and symbolic move, Ireland celebrated the closure of Israel’s embassy in Dublin. The Israeli flag was taken down from the embassy on Shelbourne Street, marking the end of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The closure follows a series of escalating tensions, with Israel accusing Ireland of “anti-Semitic rhetoric” and “crossing every red line in its relations with Israel”. The decision to close the embassy was announced by Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who cited Ireland’s recognition of a Palestinian state and its support for South Africa’s legal action against Israel at the International Court of Justice as acts of hostility.

Despite the closure, Irish leaders have emphasized that the move does not reflect anti-Israel sentiments but rather a commitment to human rights, international law, and peace. Taoiseach Simon Harris stated, “We are pro-human rights, pro-international law, and pro-peace, and we will never be intimidated or silenced into moving away from that.”

The closure has been met with mixed reactions, with some celebrating it as a victory for human rights and others expressing concern over the potential impact on diplomatic relations. The event has sparked discussions on the role of international diplomacy and the importance of maintaining open channels of communication, even in times of disagreement.
