Beijing (Agencies): China’s recent advancements in laser weaponry have indeed sparked significant interest and speculation. The Type 071 amphibious transport dock ship, specifically the Siming Shan (hull number 986), has been spotted with a newly installed laser weapon system. This system is positioned behind the 76mm dual-purpose gun on the bow and is covered by a retractable dome when not in use.

The installation of this laser weapon is part of experimental testing, reflecting China’s growing focus on Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs) for modern combat. These weapons are expected to enhance the PLA’s capabilities, particularly in countering drones and other aerial threats.

Naval defense expert noted that the choice of the Type 071 for this testing is significant, as it suggests a mature stage of development for the laser system. The Type 071, with its large displacement and capacity for troops, vehicles, and helicopters, provides an ideal platform for such experimental weaponry.

The future deployment of these laser weapons on other vessels, such as the Type 075 and Type 055, could play a crucial role in any potential operations involving Taiwan. This development aligns with broader trends in military technology, where DEWs are becoming increasingly prominent.
