Beijing (Agencies): In an ambitious leap toward sustainable energy solutions, China has announced plans to build a space-based solar power station, spanning one kilometer in width, in geostationary orbit 36,000 kilometers above Earth. The project aims to generate energy on par with the Three Gorges Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric power plants in the world, and transmit it back to Earth via microwaves.

The proposed solar station would harness uninterrupted sunlight, free from atmospheric or weather-related interference, allowing it to produce a continuous energy supply. This innovative concept is expected to revolutionize renewable energy, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and significantly contributing to global efforts against climate change.

Prominent Chinese rocket scientist and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Long Lehao, underscored the project’s monumental significance. “This is as groundbreaking as moving the Three Gorges Dam to space,” he stated.

While still in its planning stages, the initiative faces technological and logistical challenges, including the development of super heavy-lift rockets capable of transporting massive materials into orbit. However, China’s commitment reflects its strategic push for large-scale renewable energy innovations.

The project, if successful, will pave the way for a new era of sustainable energy, meeting the growing global demand for power while showcasing China’s technological prowess in space and energy sectors.
