KABUL (Agencies): A Chinese national was killed in an attack in northeastern Afghanistan, highlighting the deteriorating security situation in the country. The victim, identified as Li, was working for a mining company and was traveling with an interpreter when the incident occurred in the Dasht-e-Qala district.
The attack was claimed by the Islamic State (ISIS), which alleged that the Chinese national had been collaborating with Taliban intelligence. However, no evidence has been provided to substantiate these claims.
In response to the attack, China expressed strong condemnation and demanded a full investigation into the incident. The Chinese Foreign Ministry issued a statement of deep shock and sympathy for the victim’s family. China also called for the Afghan authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
This incident underscores the growing concerns over the safety of foreign nationals working in Afghanistan, particularly in the mining sector. Since the Taliban regained control of the country in 2021, the security situation has remained volatile, with sporadic attacks against foreign citizens and businesses.
Chinese nationals have faced risks in Afghanistan, including the December 2022 assault on a Chinese-owned hotel in Kabul. The Chinese government has continued to advise its citizens to exercise caution while operating in the country.
The Taliban have yet to issue a formal statement regarding the attack, and investigations are ongoing. Further updates are expected as more information emerges.
