CAIRO (Agencies): Egypt is on the verge of finalizing a monumental defense agreement with South Korea for the acquisition of up to 100 FA-50 Fighting Eagle light combat aircraft, signaling a transformative step in modernizing its air force. The contract, which includes technology transfer and local production of approximately 70 aircraft in Helwan, Egypt, is set to deepen strategic partnerships across Africa and the Middle East.

The FA-50, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), is a versatile aircraft capable of both light combat and advanced training roles. Powered by a General Electric F404 turbofan engine, the aircraft boasts a top speed of Mach 1.5, a range of approximately 1,850 kilometers, and a service ceiling of 48,000 feet. It is equipped with cutting-edge avionics, including a tactical datalink, precision-guided munitions, and an Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker. The FA-50 can deploy AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles, JDAM bombs, and other advanced weaponry, ensuring operational versatility. These aircraft are set to replace Egypt’s aging Alpha Jets and K-8E trainers.

Egypt’s Air Force currently operates a diverse fleet, including F-16 Fighting Falcons, Mirage 2000s, Rafale fighter jets, and MiG-29M/M2s, alongside advanced UAVs like Wing Loong II drones. The FA-50 will further enhance Egypt’s aerial defense capabilities and operational readiness.

Egypt is set to benefit significantly from this acquisition, including modernization of its fleet, cost-effectiveness, and operational versatility, while promoting self-reliance through technology transfer. The FA-50 is already in service with nations like South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Iraq and has gained interest from other countries such as Malaysia, Peru, and Senegal due to its reliability and advanced features.

The first batch of 36 FA-50s, valued at approximately $1 billion, is expected to be delivered soon, with additional acquisitions planned. KAI has affirmed that the deal will not only enhance Egypt’s aviation industry but also strengthen economic and strategic ties between the two nations.
