Tallinn (Agencies): Estonia has announced its readiness to carry out a preemptive strike on Russia if necessary to defend NATO allies. This declaration was made by the Chief of the Joint Staff of the Estonian Defence Forces, Vahur Karus, who emphasized that Estonia’s defense strategy includes the right to strike back at any aggressor threatening NATO.
This announcement comes amid heightened tensions between NATO and Russia, with Estonia playing a crucial role in the alliance’s defense posture. The new plan of the North Atlantic Alliance stipulates that in the event of an attack by Russia, Estonia has the right to respond with force to protect its territory and that of its allies.
Estonia’s defense minister, Hanno Pevkur, has previously highlighted the importance of not overreacting to hybrid attacks from Russia, which include cyberattacks and disinformation campaigns. However, the readiness for a preemptive strike underscores the seriousness with which Estonia views the potential threat from its eastern neighbor.
This move is part of a broader NATO strategy to enhance the security of its member states, particularly those bordering Russia. The alliance continues to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, with discussions ongoing about allowing Ukraine to use NATO weapons for strikes inside Russian territory.
