New Delhi (Agencies): In a significant move to bolster defense preparedness along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the Indian Army has deployed Mahindra Defence Systems Limited’s (MDSL) 4×4 Vehicle-Mounted Infantry Mortar Systems (VMIMS) in the Sikkim region. The deployment was confirmed by the Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps on March 14 through an official social media announcement.

The VMIMS is based on the Mahindra ALSV (Armored Light Specialist Vehicle) and features the Milanion NTGS Alakran-L deployable mortar system equipped with an 81mm barrel. Designed for swift and precise firepower, key features of the system include:

  • Firing range: 7.2 km with a firing rate of 20 rounds per minute.
  • Ammunition capacity: 72 mortar bombs stored behind the armored cab.
  • High mobility: Rapid “shoot and scoot” tactics for quick repositioning.
  • Automation: Enhanced efficiency and reduced crew workload, operated by just two personnel.

The advanced mortar system’s mobility and quick deployment capabilities make it well-suited for high-altitude operations along the LAC, which borders China, Bhutan, and Nepal.

The Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) had initiated the fast-track acquisition of 50 automated infantry mortar systems in January 2023. MDSL’s VMIMS was selected for its superior design, with deliveries starting in 2023 and expected to be completed by the end of 2024.

The deployment aligns with India’s broader strategy of modernizing its armed forces and enhancing operational readiness in contested border regions. The VMIMS is also heliborne-capable, enabling rapid deployment in remote and inaccessible terrains. Additionally, the initiative reinforces India’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) mission, promoting indigenous defense manufacturing and reducing reliance on foreign arms imports.

The deployment underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its border defenses amid ongoing tensions along the LAC, ensuring its forces are equipped with cutting-edge technology to counter any threats effectively.
