New Delhi (Agencies): In a major step towards bolstering national security and achieving defense self-reliance, the Indian Army is set to deploy a new generation of fully indigenous air defense systems. These advanced systems aim to create a comprehensive multi-tiered shield against the full spectrum of aerial threats, ranging from high-speed aircraft to drones and cruise missiles.
The deployment will include three cutting-edge platforms developed in India: the Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM), Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM), and the Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS). The initiative is seen as a significant milestone in India’s journey toward self-sufficiency in defense, showcasing the capabilities of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
- Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile MRSAM: Long-Range Precision and Mobility
Jointly developed by India and Israel, the MRSAM is designed to neutralize high-speed aerial threats at long ranges. The system recently completed successful flight tests on April 3 and 4, proving its combat readiness. Set to replace aging Soviet-era systems such as the Kvadrat and OSA-AKM, MRSAM regiments will be deployed to protect sensitive border areas and critical infrastructure.
- Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile System QRSAM: Agile and Battlefield-Ready
The Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile system is engineered for rapid deployment and mobility. Featuring modern radar systems, fire-and-move capabilities, and the ability to engage multiple targets within a 30 km radius, QRSAM is ideal for active battlefield scenarios. Following successful trials, the system is now ready for induction, enhancing the Army’s quick-reaction capabilities against surprise aerial attacks.
- VSHORADS: Tactical Edge at Low Altitudes
Designed for man-portable, tactical use, the VSHORADS system addresses close-range, low-altitude threats such as UAVs and helicopters. Equipped with an advanced Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker and high agility, VSHORADS provides frontline troops with a powerful defense tool. Having recently cleared developmental trials, it is now ready for mass production.
- Akash NG and the Vision of a Multi-Tiered Defense
Complementing these three systems is the Akash Next Generation (Akash NG) missile, which will serve as an additional layer in India’s evolving air defense architecture. Together, these platforms will offer multi-tiered protection, capable of neutralizing threats at various ranges and altitudes.
This move not only strengthens India’s aerial defense network but also marks a significant advancement in the Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative. By reducing reliance on imported systems and showcasing indigenous innovation, the Indian Army is taking a decisive step toward securing its skies with homegrown solutions.
