Jakarta, Indonesia (Agencies): Indonesia is deliberating over a formal request from Russia to station its Aerospace Forces (VKS) aircraft at Manuhua Air Force Base in Biak Numfor, located in the eastern province of Papua. The proposal, which surfaced following a February 2025 meeting between Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Russia’s Secretary of the Security Council Sergei Shoigu, has sparked discussions about potential implications for regional and international security dynamics.
Manuhua Air Force Base, shared with the Frans Kaisiepo Airport, is already a significant facility for the Indonesian Air Force. It is home to Aviation Squadron 27, which operates CN235 surveillance aircraft, and the newly formed 9th Air Wing, which is yet to receive its aircraft allocation. Strategically positioned in Papua, the base is approximately 1,300 kilometers from Darwin, Australia, underscoring its regional importance.
Russia’s interest in the airbase reportedly includes long-range aircraft deployments. While the request lacks specific details on the number or types of planes, past ad hoc landings of Russian Tupolev Tu-95 bombers and Il-76 airlifters at the base indicate a history of operational use.
