Dear Editor

The PTI and the government must responsibly handle protests, as highlighted by recent political unrest in Rawalpindi and Islamabad. While maintaining democratic rights is equally important, the government must also protect public order.

The government’s current strategy of extensive roadblocks, internet disruptions, and curfew-like measures has caused widespread inconvenience to residents and businesses. Although this strategy was intended to keep things under control, it has alienated individuals who are already annoyed by frequent interruptions to their daily routines. The government should consider alternatives to using harsh measures, such negotiating protest zones that permit gatherings without immobilizing the city. Priority one should be given to maintaining vital supplies and services since doing so would show that the public is cared for even in the face of political unrest.

On the other hand, PTI must recognize its responsibility to ensure its protests do not escalate into chaos. Its rhetoric and strategies should focus on peaceful advocacy rather than creating pressure on party workers or stoking tensions. By coordinating with the government on logistics and timings, PTI can help reduce the impact on citizens. It is also vital for the party leadership to set clear guidelines for participants to avoid roadblocks, supply chain disruptions, or any behavior that might harm the public.

Both sides must act with restraint and reason, prioritizing the citizens’ welfare while respecting the democratic process. Only through mutual understanding can the balance between political expression and public order be achieved.

Yours sincerely,

Muhammad Ayoub Rajper
