Tripoli (Agencies): Libyan commander Khalifa Haftar has granted Russian forces control of the Maaten al-Sarra air base, a strategic facility near Libya’s borders with Chad and Sudan. The move marks a significant development in Russia’s efforts to solidify its presence in Africa.

The Maaten al-Sarra air base is located in a geopolitically critical area, offering access to the Sahel region, which includes conflict-prone nations such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Sudan. Russian forces have reportedly started reactivating the air base by upgrading infrastructure, including runways and storage facilities, to establish a robust logistical hub.
Analysts suggest that this transfer aligns with Russia’s broader strategy to extend its influence across Africa. By securing a foothold in southern Libya, Moscow aims to strengthen its operational capabilities for military and economic ventures in the region.
“This move signifies a calculated step by Russia to enhance its power projection in Africa,” a regional expert commented. “It allows Russia to create a pivotal logistics center for its operations across the Sahel.”
International observers are closely watching the development, as it could have wide-ranging implications for regional stability. Western nations have raised concerns over the growing involvement of external powers in Africa, particularly amid escalating tensions in the Sahel and neighboring regions.
Russia’s partnership with Haftar, who controls eastern Libya, has been a cornerstone of its strategy to gain influence in the oil-rich nation. The handover of the Maaten al-Sarra air base is seen as a continuation of this alliance, further solidifying Moscow’s presence in Libya and beyond.
