Madrid, Lisbon (Agencies): A massive power outage disrupted daily life across Spain and Portugal on Monday, plunging cities like Madrid and Lisbon into chaos. The blackout affected traffic lights, airports, and train stations, causing widespread delays and confusion.

According to Portugal’s grid operator Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), the outage extended across the Iberian peninsula and parts of France. Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica is working with energy companies to restore power and investigate the cause.

Portugal’s police urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, citing traffic light failures as a major risk. In Madrid, the lack of traffic lights resulted in significant road congestion, with commuters navigating challenging conditions. A Madrid resident described the scene as “a bit of a jungle.”

The power cut also affected airports and train services, with some departures canceled due to failures in screens and lighting systems. E-Redes, Portugal’s electricity provider, attributed the disruption to “a wider European problem” and is focused on re-establishing connections.

Authorities have emphasized caution as restoration efforts continue, highlighting the need for patience and public safety during this widespread crisis.
