Islamabad (Khyber Mail): The 67th Malaysian National Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at a grand reception held in Islamabad, underscoring the deep-rooted ties and growing economic cooperation between Pakistan and Malaysia. Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, graced the event as the chief guest, with Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tessori and Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh also in attendance.
In his keynote address, Federal Minister Jam Kamal Khan emphasized the enduring bond between Pakistan and Malaysia, highlighting the shared values of faith, fraternity, and mutual respect that have strengthened their relationship over the decades. “The friendship between our two nations is rooted in a deep understanding and respect for each other’s culture and values, and this has been the foundation of our growing economic ties,” he remarked.
Reflecting on Malaysia’s remarkable journey since its independence, the Minister praised the nation’s achievements in economic growth, cultural harmony, environmental sustainability, and social justice. “Malaysia’s progress is a testament to the power of diversity and forward-thinking vision,” Jam Kamal stated, noting the country’s ability to balance modernity with tradition while fostering a cohesive society.
The Federal Minister also highlighted the positive trajectory of trade relations between Pakistan and Malaysia, acknowledging the steady growth in economic exchanges over the years. He pointed out that despite this progress, there remains vast untapped potential for further collaboration, particularly in sectors such as information technology, agriculture, manufacturing, and halal products.
Calling for increased Malaysian investments in Pakistan’s infrastructure, energy, and tourism sectors, Jam Kamal stressed the need to leverage the strengths of both nations for mutual benefit. “The recent economic reforms undertaken by both countries create fertile ground for private sector collaboration and global competitiveness,” he added, encouraging businesses in both countries to explore new opportunities for partnership.
Jam Kamal Khan also expressed Pakistan’s eagerness to strengthen cooperation with Malaysia on regional and global platforms, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). He underlined the importance of working together on pressing global issues like digital transformation, sustainable development, and climate change.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to its strategic partnership with Malaysia, the Minister expressed confidence in the continued growth of relations between the two nations. “Pakistan is eager to explore new avenues of cooperation with Malaysia, particularly in areas that will benefit both our economies and peoples,” he concluded.

Every year, on the 31st of August, Malaysians from all walks of life – regardless of race, religion, or political belief – unite to celebrate the National Day, marking the moment when our beloved nation gained independence on this very day in 1957,” the High Commissioner stated.
He recounted the historic events leading to Malaysia’s independence, describing how Malaysians stood united at the Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpur on the eve of independence, witnessing the lowering of the British Union Jack and the hoisting of the Jalur Gemilang. “The following morning, in a moment that has been etched in the annals of history, thousands gathered at Merdeka Stadium, where the Duke of Gloucester, representing Her Majesty the Queen, handed a symbol of independence to our first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman. It was here that Tunku, with the strength of timbre accompanied by the people’s spirit, declared ‘Merdeka’ seven times, marking the dawn of a new era for Malaya,” he added.
The High Commissioner highlighted the significance of Independence Day, or Hari Merdeka, as a time for Malaysians to come together to celebrate their rich heritage and shared achievements. He emphasized the principles of unity, tolerance, and mutual respect as central to the Malaysian identity, reflecting a nation that has learned to embrace its multiculturalism as an indelible strength.
“The journey from 1957 to 2024 has been one of remarkable transformation. Malaysia has evolved from a newly independent state with a burgeoning economy to a thriving, modern nation that is increasingly influential on the global stage. From advancements in infrastructure to progress in technology and education, the country’s development over these decades has been nothing short of impressive. Key achievements such as the growth of Kuala Lumpur into a bustling metropolis and Malaysia’s prominence in regional and international trade highlight the nation’s dynamic progress,” the High Commissioner said.
He also reflected on the significance of Merdeka Day as a time of reflection, urging Malaysians to honor the sacrifices of the nation’s past leaders and heroes. “Merdeka Day is not just about waving the Jalur Gemilang or participating in grand parades; it is a day of reflection. It is a day for all Malaysians to look back at the sacrifices of our past leaders and heroes, who fought tirelessly for the independence we cherish today. It is a day for us to honor their legacy by continuing to uphold the values of unity, tolerance, and respect that they envisioned for Malaysia,” he stressed.
Addressing the guests in Islamabad, the High Commissioner spoke of the close friendship between Malaysia and Pakistan, noting that this bond offers a glimpse into the vibrant and diverse culture of Malaysia. He highlighted the theme of this year’s celebration, ‘Malaysia MADANI: Jiwa Merdeka,’ which emphasizes the spirit of togetherness across all segments of society and reflects the holistic unity of a developed and progressive nation.
The High Commissioner concluded by acknowledging the significant strides Malaysia has made in building a resilient and dynamic economy, and expressed optimism about the future of the strategic partnership between Malaysia and Pakistan. “In this regard, our strategic partnership with Pakistan holds immense potential. Both Malaysia and Pakistan share a deep-rooted bond, and we are committed to further strengthening our brotherly ties, particularly in areas such as trade, investment, and technological collaboration. The upcoming visit of YAB Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Anwar Ibrahim to Pakistan underscores the importance we place on this relationship. This visit is expected to elevate our partnership to the next level, fostering greater cooperation for mutual benefit between our nations,” he stated.
