Islamabad (Khyber Mail): The Pakistan Navy is set to enhance its maritime defense capabilities with the formal induction of two new warships, PNS Babar and PNS Hunain, on Defence Day, observed on September 6. President Asif Ali Zardari is expected to be the chief guest at the induction ceremony.

PNS Babar, a state-of-the-art MILGEM-class ship, was constructed in Turkiye. It is equipped with advanced surface, underwater, and air combat capabilities, including a vertical launching system for aerial threats. The construction of PNS Babar began on June 4, 2020, and it was launched on August 15, 2021. The ship was officially commissioned on September 23, 2023.

PNS Hunain, an Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV), was built in Romania. This multipurpose vessel is designed for both surface and aerial combat, as well as search and rescue operations. It features advanced electronic warfare systems, anti-ship and anti-air warfare weapons, and a self-protection and terminal defense system. PNS Hunain was commissioned in July 2024 at Romania’s Damen Shipyard.

The addition of these warships signifies a major step forward in Pakistan’s naval strength, enhancing the Navy’s ability to safeguard maritime frontiers and conduct security patrols in the Indian Ocean. The induction of PNS Babar and PNS Hunain is part of a broader initiative to modernize the Pakistan Navy, which includes the construction of additional Babar-class ships in Istanbul and Karachi.

The ceremony will mark a significant milestone in Pakistan’s defense capabilities, reflecting the country’s growing defense partnerships with Turkiye and Romania.
