Peshawar (Khyber Mail): The Building Energy Research Center (BERC) at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar, in collaboration with the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA), recently organized a significant event in Islamabad—the formal roll-out of the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) 2023. This event represents a crucial step toward promoting energy efficiency and sustainability in Pakistan’s construction industry.

The roll-out event was part of the project titled “Transformation of Construction Sector in Pakistan: A Pathway towards Clean, Green, and Sustainable Buildings.” Funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the project aims to revolutionize building practices by integrating energy-saving measures.

The ECBC 2023 is a comprehensive set of guidelines designed to enhance energy efficiency in buildings. It addresses critical aspects such as insulation, ventilation, and lighting to reduce energy consumption. The code aims to create comfortable indoor environments while minimizing energy expenditure.

NEECA developed the “Manual for the Implementation of ECBC-2023.” This manual provides clear explanations of the code’s key sections and practical guidance on implementation. Builders, architects, and engineers can now follow standardized procedures to achieve energy-efficient designs.

By adhering to the ECBC, residential and commercial buildings can significantly reduce energy costs. Improved insulation, efficient windows, and roofing materials contribute to lower utility bills. The code aligns with Pakistan’s commitment to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices.

Dr. Sardar Mohazzam, Managing Director at NEECA, expressed gratitude to stakeholders. He emphasized the urgency of implementing the ECBC to address Pakistan’s energy challenges. Nationwide outreach and capacity building are essential for successful adoption.

Wolfgang Hesse, Cluster Coordinator Energy and Climate Change at GIZ, highlighted the collaboration between GIZ and NEECA. He acknowledged the complexities within the energy sector, including soaring prices and economic pressures. NEECA’s revised Energy Conservation Buildings Code serves as a valuable guideline for digitalizing and standardizing buildings, offering a chance to reduce energy consumption and costs.

Dr. Zeeshan Ullah likely delved into specific sections of the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) during the event to highlight the benefits of compliance for building stakeholders. Dr. Naveed, Director of the Buildings Energy Research Center (BERC), presented research products, online tools, and software developed to support the implementation of ECBC-2023.

This milestone contributes to sustainable and energy-efficient construction practices in Pakistan.
