Helsinki (Agencies): In a major step towards strengthening defense cooperation, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark have signed an agreement to standardize the certification of ammunition used for their mortars and artillery. The agreement, signed under the Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO) framework, aims to streamline certification processes, enable joint procurement, and enhance security of supply across the region.

A key aspect of this initiative is the establishment of a joint expert group responsible for coordinating requirements and business models for strategic partnerships in ammunition production and procurement. By adopting a common certification process, the Nordic countries aim to increase efficiency, secure long-term ammunition supplies, and support their respective defense industries.

As part of this broader defense strategy, Norwegian defense firm Nammo has won a contract to manufacture grenades and ammunition at a facility in northwest Denmark. This marks Denmark’s return to domestic ammunition production after a 55-year hiatus, strengthening its national defense capabilities.

The move aligns with the European Union’s wider goal of boosting artillery ammunition production amid increasing geopolitical tensions. The agreement also enhances cooperation among Nordic nations, ensuring a stable and secure supply chain for military needs in the years to come.
