Muscat, Oman – The Omani Ministry of Defense (MoD) has signed a contract with Spanish defense company Indra for additional Lanza 3D long-range early warning radars, boosting the Royal Air Force of Oman’s (RAFO) air defense capabilities. The agreement, finalized on April 10 during a visit to Spain by MoD Secretary General Mohammed bin Nasser al-Zaabi, includes the design, supply, and installation of the radar systems alongside voice-over radio communications and integration with Oman’s command-and-control system.
The Lanza 3D radar system is recognized for its cutting-edge features, including three-dimensional tracking of altitude, direction, and range. With an extended detection range exceeding 400 kilometers and an altitude coverage of 30,480 meters, the system is equipped to handle modern aerial threats such as drones, aircraft, and missiles. Its Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) technology ensures secure target identification and tracking, making it a vital component of Oman’s air defense infrastructure.
Indra highlighted additional benefits under the contract, such as enhancing the RAFO’s ability to perform third-level maintenance on its radar systems. The radar’s resilience in diverse geographical conditions like deserts, mountains, and coastal zones ensures reliable performance across Oman’s varied landscape.
This acquisition builds on a partnership initiated in 2014, when Oman first contracted Indra to develop an integrated surveillance and air defense system. The Spanish company previously completed a state-of-the-art air defense framework for Oman in 2019, incorporating advanced technologies to monitor and protect its airspace.
The expanded capabilities introduced by the new Lanza 3D radars will significantly enhance Oman’s ability to detect and respond to aerial threats, reinforcing its position as a regional leader in air defense. With cutting-edge features and seamless integration into its defense network, Oman is poised to address current and future security challenges effectively.
