Washington, D.C. (Agencies): The United States Department of Defense has approved the sale of FIM-92K Stinger Block I missiles to Morocco in a deal valued at $825 million. The announcement, made by the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), reveals Morocco’s request for 600 Stinger missiles, along with a package of engineering, logistical, and technical support services.

The DSCA stated that this sale aligns with U.S. foreign policy and national security interests, enhancing the defense capabilities of Morocco, a key non-NATO ally in North Africa. The agency emphasized that the deal would bolster Morocco’s ability to address current and future threats without altering the military balance in the region.

“This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major non-NATO ally that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in North Africa,” the statement noted.

Stinger missiles, known for their versatility, are shoulder-fired, infrared-guided surface-to-air weapons capable of targeting airborne threats from various angles. They can also be vehicle-mounted for broader applications.

The announcement follows the 2020 ten-year agreement between Morocco and the U.S. to strengthen military cooperation, signed during a formal visit to Rabat by then U.S. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper. Morocco has not yet issued an official response to the Pentagon’s decision.

This agreement highlights the continued partnership between the two nations in promoting regional security and stability while advancing Morocco’s defense infrastructure.
