Beijing (Agencies): The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy has commissioned its first Type 054B frigate, named Luohe, marking a significant milestone in naval technology and defense capabilities. The 5,000-ton-class warship was officially handed over during a ceremonial event at a naval port in Qingdao, Shandong Province, on Wednesday morning.
The Luohe is a new-generation frigate independently developed by China. With hull number 545, the vessel boasts significant advancements in stealth technology, combat command systems, and integrated firepower control. These enhancements significantly improve the frigate’s combat performance and its ability to undertake diverse military missions.
- A Historic Commissioning Ceremony
The commissioning ceremony featured full ceremonial flags, the national anthem, and the raising of the Five-Starred Red Flag alongside military and naval flags. Officers and sailors stood in formation, symbolizing the vessel’s readiness for duty.
The Luohe is designed to operate in both coastal and far-sea environments. It will fill roles previously assigned to smaller Type 056 corvettes in coastal waters and support larger Type 055 destroyers in distant seas, enhancing the overall combat effectiveness of the PLA Navy’s formations.
- Technological Leap
Chinese military experts have highlighted the Luohe’s advancements over its predecessor, the Type 054A frigate. With a larger hull and increased displacement, the Type 054B offers enhanced firepower, superior stealth features, and the capability to carry larger utility helicopters like the Z-20.
Song Zhongping, a Chinese military expert, noted that many cutting-edge technologies used in the Type 055 destroyer have likely been incorporated into the design of the Type 054B. This includes improvements in radar, electronic warfare systems, and integrated command networks.
The frigate’s balanced capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship missions, and air defense make it a versatile addition to China’s naval fleet. Experts anticipate the Type 054B will be mass-produced, much like its predecessor, to address various maritime security challenges.
- Strategic Importance
Senior Colonel Wu Qian, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense, stated in 2023 that the development of the Type 054B aligns with China’s national security needs and broader plans for naval modernization. “The goal is to defend national sovereignty, security, and development interests while safeguarding regional and global peace and stability,” Wu said.
The Luohe’s commissioning comes at a time when the PLA Navy is expanding its far-sea operations. Experts believe the frigate will play a key role in escorting aircraft carrier and amphibious assault groups, particularly in air defense and anti-submarine roles. Its extended endurance and ability to integrate with other naval assets will further enhance China’s maritime capabilities.
- A Symbol of Naval Modernization
The Luohe has been stationed at Qingdao, homeport of the aircraft carrier Liaoning. Naval experts expect it to conduct joint training with the carrier group, with potential deployment to other strategic naval bases, including Sanya in Hainan Province.
Zhang Junshe, a Chinese naval expert, described the Type 054B as “one of the most advanced frigates in the world.” He added that its commissioning demonstrates China’s progress in naval equipment development and manufacturing, strengthening the PLA Navy’s comprehensive combat capabilities.
The Luohe’s induction highlights China’s commitment to advancing its naval power and achieving strategic defense objectives in an increasingly complex maritime environment.
