Doha (Agencies): Qatar Airways announced on Thursday that it will resume flights to Damascus, Syria, starting January 7, 2025, marking the airline’s return to the war-torn country after years of halted operations.

In a statement, Qatar Airways confirmed it will operate three weekly flights to the Syrian capital, emphasizing the move as part of its efforts to enhance regional connectivity and meet rising passenger demand.

“The decision to restart operations to Syria reflects the airline’s commitment to fostering regional connectivity and supporting passenger demand. Qatar Airways is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure all necessary safety, security, and operational standards are met ahead of the relaunch,” the statement read.

Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, CEO of Qatar Airways, expressed optimism about the relaunch, describing Damascus as a destination of historical and cultural significance.

The announcement follows recent diplomatic overtures between Doha and Syria. On December 23, Qatar’s State Minister Mohamed Al-Khulaifi met with Ahmed Al-Sharaa, head of Syria’s new administration, hinting at plans to restore direct air links between the two nations.

The resumption of flights comes in the wake of significant political shifts in Syria. On December 8, anti-regime forces took control of Damascus, prompting longtime Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to flee to Russia, effectively ending the Baath Party’s decades-long rule.
