MOSCOW/KIEV (Agencies): Russian forces have captured Velikaya Novoselka, a critical Ukrainian stronghold in the southern Donbass region, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Sunday. The town, located in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), served as a major logistics hub and a key element of Ukraine’s defensive line in the region.

Velikaya Novoselka, previously dubbed Kiev’s “last stronghold” in southern Donbass, was part of the heavily fortified ‘Vremevka Ledge.’ The area saw intense fighting during Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive and Russia’s subsequent offensive, which began in late 2024.

The fall of Velikaya Novoselka holds significant implications for both sides:

  • For Russia

The capture marks a strategic victory for Moscow, allowing Russian forces to break through Ukraine’s defensive lines in the region and paving the way for advances toward other Ukrainian-held territories in Donbass and the Zaporozhye region. The town’s logistical importance enhances Russia’s ability to supply and position its troops for future operations.

“This victory demonstrates the effectiveness of our forces in neutralizing fortified Ukrainian positions,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

  • For Ukraine

For Ukraine, the loss is a major setback, complicating its defensive strategy in southern Donbass and potentially hindering future counteroffensive plans. Velikaya Novoselka had served as a vital supply hub and a critical barrier to Russian advances.

Military analysts warn that this development increases the pressure on Ukraine to fortify its remaining positions in southern and eastern Ukraine, especially in the Zaporozhye region.

  • Broader Impact

The fall of Velikaya Novoselka could reshape the dynamics of the conflict in southern Ukraine, giving Russia momentum to consolidate its territorial control. It also underscores the evolving nature of the war, as both sides continue to grapple with the strategic importance of fortified towns and logistics hubs in the ongoing struggle.

This development has drawn international attention as both sides prepare for further escalations in the region.
