STOCKHOLM (Agencies): In a significant policy shift, Sweden has announced a new program offering financial incentives for immigrants to voluntarily return to their home countries. Starting in 2026, immigrants who choose to repatriate will be eligible to receive up to 350,000 Swedish kronor (approximately $34,000) per person.
The initiative, unveiled by Migration Minister Johan Forssell, is part of a broader effort to address the challenges of integrating newcomers into Swedish society. “We are in the midst of a paradigm shift in our migration policy,” Forssell stated during a press conference.
Currently, the financial assistance for voluntary return is capped at 10,000 kronor per adult and 5,000 kronor per child, with a maximum of 40,000 kronor per family. The new program significantly increases these amounts, aiming to encourage more immigrants to take advantage of the offer.
The policy has been influenced by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, who have gained substantial political influence in recent years. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, leading a minority coalition backed by the Sweden Democrats, has prioritized addressing immigration and crime since taking office in 2022.
Despite the financial incentives, the program has faced criticism. A recent government-appointed probe advised against increasing the grant, citing concerns over its cost-effectiveness. However, proponents argue that the increased grant will make the offer more attractive and help alleviate the pressures on Sweden’s social services.
The program is part of Sweden’s ongoing efforts to manage its immigration policies and ensure sustainable integration of immigrants into society. The government plans to monitor the program’s effectiveness and make necessary adjustments as it progresses.
