Kyiv (Agencies): Ukraine and the United Kingdom have signed a landmark 100-year partnership agreement, symbolizing an enduring commitment to cooperation across various sectors. The agreement was signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer during his visit to Kyiv on January 16, 2025.
This extensive partnership spans defense, trade, energy, cultural, and scientific collaborations while reinforcing Ukraine’s NATO aspirations and maritime security. The agreement also aims to counter foreign information manipulation, ensure justice, and strengthen socio-cultural ties.
Prime Minister Starmer emphasized the significance of the pact, stating, “(Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s ambition to wrench Ukraine away from its closest partners has been a monumental strategic failure. Instead, we are closer than ever, and this partnership will take that friendship to the next level.”
A notable feature of the agreement is the UK’s pledge to provide annual military assistance of at least $3.6 billion to Ukraine for “as long as needed.” This commitment reflects the UK’s steadfast support amid Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia.
The signing took place amid heightened tensions, with Kyiv experiencing a Russian drone attack during Starmer’s visit. The incident highlighted the challenges Ukraine continues to face while underscoring the importance of international solidarity.
The 100-year partnership builds on previous collaborations, including the 2020 trade and partnership agreement and the 2024 bilateral security deal. The agreement marks a new chapter in Ukraine-UK relations, symbolizing resilience and a shared vision for the future.
