Kyiv (Agencies): Ukraine has taken a significant step toward developing its military space capabilities with the creation of a Space Policy Directorate within the Ministry of Defense. The new department aims to lay the groundwork for the establishment of Ukraine’s Space Forces, Deputy Minister of Defense for Digital Development Kateryna Chernohorenko announced during the Space for Ukraine Forum.
The directorate will focus on developing a regulatory framework for military space activities, adopting advanced space technologies, and collaborating with international partners, developers, and researchers. Chernohorenko emphasized that despite the ongoing war, Ukraine remains committed to its space ambitions, leveraging its decades of expertise in scientific research and technological development.
As part of a ten-year roadmap, Ukraine plans to deploy national defense satellites, enhance air-raid warning systems, and establish space monitoring capabilities by 2030. The initiative will begin with an audit of Ukraine’s space infrastructure, followed by the development of indigenous satellite technology and space situational awareness systems. Ultimately, Ukraine aims to create a comprehensive defense space segment, featuring a satellite constellation capable of providing real-time analytics and integrating with global security networks.
The move positions Ukraine alongside other nations that have established military space forces and underscores Kyiv’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities through cutting-edge space technology.
