TASHKENT (Khyber Mail): President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has underlined the critical role of parliamentary control in ensuring the effective implementation of bilateral agreements with Pakistan. His remarks came during a meeting on April 7 with a high-level delegation from Pakistan, led by Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, on the sidelines of the 150th anniversary Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
At the outset of the meeting, Gillani conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif to President Mirziyoyev. Both sides expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and Pakistan, particularly the increase in mutual trade, joint ventures, and direct flights. The regular organization of business forums and exhibitions featuring top companies from both nations was also noted as a positive development.
The talks placed special focus on the growing importance of parliamentary institutions in monitoring and advancing agreements made during recent high-level visits. President Mirziyoyev called for accelerating joint priority projects in trade, investment, and transport—especially the ambitious Trans-Afghan corridor initiative—while also expanding regional cooperation and people-to-people ties through cultural and humanitarian exchanges.
